Victor feels more confident participating in class than he did before, but he can't shake the feeling that he could have done better. Perhaps in the future he will try a fusion technique. \n\n[img[https://p.gr-assets.com/540x540/fit/hostedimages/1380434815/878035.gif]]\n\nPress restart on the left hand side if you want to do better!\n\nTHE END\n
Competency\n[img[http://edcetera.rafter.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Competency-based-training.jpg]]\n\n From global dexterity reading and lectures, competency has been defined as how good, how easy, and how confident you feel at performing a new behavior. \n\n To resolve Victor's issues with participation, he decided he should meet with his [[mentor|Mentor]].\n\n\n
Focusing on improving this aspect was not a very effective strategy to help Victor adapt his behavior to participate in class. Victor did not feel more confident in participating in class.\n\n After further reflection, Victor realized his core challenge was competency. To create strategies that would be effective for adapting behavior and overcoming his competency challenges, Victor decided he should see his [[mentor.|Mentor]] \n

For one, they discussed how to read a scientific paper: Victor had been reading it from beginning to the end, whereas she suggested focusing on sections at a time such as starting with background information, moving on to the figures section, and then backtracking to the results section. In addition, Karen explained that Professor Paragon questions were predictable. This lead to a [[eureka!|Eureka]] moment for Victor because it meant that Victor could anticipate these questions and a lot of the pressue that came with thinking on his feet would be eliminated!\n\n\n
Authenticity\n[img[http://targetx.com/wp-content/uploads/be-authentic.jpeg]]\n\n From global dexterity reading and lectures, authenticity has been defined as feeling wrong, foreign, or disengenous when engaging in this behavior. \n\n The issue Victor faced with participation was he was very afraid of appearing unintelligent in front of his classmates. The fusion technique combines a mix of different styles, one that you are comfortable with and one that is needed to succeed in the situation. The fusion style was very exciting for Victor because he believed it would help him put a personal spin on his participation in class which would help him feel more comfortable. Specifically, Victor realized he wanted to ask questions he had about the reading before class, so that he would have a fuller understanding of the subject.\nNext time he participates, he should \n\n[[a) |good end]]fusion!\n[[b) |okay end]]stick with what Victor has been doing\n[[c) |bad end]]ignore all advice and follow his gut\n\n

While staying true to your roots is important, Victor felt he really regressed by going back to his original strategy of reading the paper from start to finish. He struggled to remember all the details and never felt comfortable with any answers he came up to Professor Paragon's questions. Next time Victor vowed to listen to his mentor and experiment with a fusion style like Jin had in the Gemini case study.\n[img[http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lbuovq4sph1qzj01e.gif]]\n\nPress restart on the left hand side if you want to do better!\n\nTHE END

Using pages 39-41 of global dexterity, Victor diagnosed the core challenges: competency, resentment, and authenticity. The biggest challenge Victor had in participating in class was his fear of saying the wrong answer and being judged by other students as incompetent. \n\nThis is an issue of:\n[[a) |Authenticity]] authenticity \n[[b) |Competency]] competency \n[[c) |Resentment]] resentment
Excited to participate and see improvement, Victor came to class with the list of answers and notes to questions he expected the professor to ask. His participation felt a lot more natural than previous attempts because he had spent some time prior to class thinking about the questions the professor ended up posing to the class. Although Victor felt better, there were still many questions Victor could not answer, and he realized that more steps were needed to ensure total participation. Victor stumbled across such a tool when he read about the case study about Jin Wang at Gemini Consulting. The case study brought up the idea of a [[fusion|Fusion]] technique and this sent Victor's mind spinning with ideas.\n\n[img[http://s1.hubimg.com/u/3357644_f520.jpg]]\nAn example of Tex-Mex a fusion of Texan and Mexican cuisine.
